Patch from the inside, if its on the safety zones of tire. No good if on the side wall or 1st two rows of threads from the sidewall.

i've had a repair job that's held but for nearly 2 years and i don't notice lost of pressure in the tire more than the others, it was a plug repair near the center of the tire between the treads, but I drive it like a regular car, don't know how the plug would hold up if tracked or raced or if driven really aggressively on the streets.

What's the realistic risk of autocrossing a car with a tire that has been patched? A flat tire, which is easy to change. BFD. It's not like you're driving 130mph and risking a blow-out at speed. You go faster on the interstate than you will at autocross.

So what's a proper and permanent fix (aside from getting a new one)? A patch?
Plug and patch from the inside. Plus inner liner sealer on the....err....inner liner.

The plug has a pretty good chance of being ripped out. You have to open up the hole pretty wide with a rasp to install the plug. Rapid air loss could mean a beat up wheel or something worse.

Or get it plugged and patched for $0-$10. Whichever.

I've used rope plug on a Hoosier autocross tire. Worked fine. I did the patch less than 5 minutes before a run. Ran on the plugged tire for several events after that with no issue.

Come on, there's a chance, but it's miniscule. If he's worried, he can buy a new tire, or get yet another plug put in, but I wouldn't worry about it for autox any more than I'd worry about it for street driving.
^ Agreed.

it's always the people who never autocross who always worry about damaging their car at an autocross.
