Default Pre-Muffler options....

Guys,

When I bought my car I didn't realize there was supposed to be a pre-muffler. Mine has been removed. The work was done well with the result being a car noticeably louder than stock. Too loud if you ask my wife

Dealer tells me I can't buy just the pre-muffler from them - would have to replace the whole muffler from cat back.

I know this is almost sacrilege, but I'd like to get the car back to the stock sound levels for the sake of my marriage

Anybody got a pre-muffler sitting around they'd like to unload? Any other ideas that aren't $1000+ cat back exhausts?

Thanks.

Go to www.jegs.com and buy a resonator. Have the mechanic weld on the resonator.

I don't know why anyone would go without a resonator. An inline4 without a resonator gives that farty raspy sound that everyone makes fun of.

Pardon my ignorance. If the resonator is a tube that extends perpendicular to the exhaust pipe behind the cat, then my car has one. If not, then I don't.

Will a resonator reduce overall sound levels or just change the tone?

Chris.

Resonator = the little stubby pipe that sticks straight out from the exhaust, just after the cat.

Pre-muffler - not sure what you mean by this. There is a cansiter between the resonator and the Y-split in the exhaust - is this the one that has been removed? If so, somebody must have welded in a piece of straight pipe there.

Anyway, given the frequency with which people swap out stock exhausts for aftermarket, the price so a stock one seems to be around $100. Better yet, post in your local forum and see if anybody is looking for more sound and would like to do a straight-up trade. No money should change hands in either direction for this, IMO.
