Default A problem of recognition and respect

I haven't posted in a while but this has been bugging me, so where better to come with a S2000 concern than fellow owners.

Do the rest of you still have to explain to every fool at a party, gathering, office, etc. what an S2000 is?

Why when someone mentions a Porsche does everyone say "aaahh" like they know it must be awesome, but mention an S2000 and you get blank stares. Then when you try to tell them the great history how it is Honda's 50th anniversary car, a technological marvel, etc. the audience starts saying, "oh a Honda, well I had a nice civic in college, yada, yada....".

I don't know if there is an easy answer or if I should really care what people think (probably the latter) but I think the S2000 needs more recognition and more respect.

Besides taking everyone you meet on a test drive, do any of you have a good way of explaining to people this is not another economy product from Honda this is a real world class sports car?

Now don't get me wrong I love all Honda's products and own several of them, however I wish when you said "S2000" the light would go on and people would picture the great car it is.

O.K. I'm done ranting.

Owners know what a great car it is. That's all that counts in my book. I overheard a guy asking at an autoshow "is this the new civic 2000?" that pretty much agrivated me but we can't all be auto enthusiasts.

The other day a guy came into my office and asked if that was my blue Prelude-WTF.

It is annoying when people put down the car because it is a Honda. However, I do like not seeing them on every corner like the 350z.

i think this issue is one that has followed the S2000 since it's release. It's the same idea as the Neon SRT. Hell it's fast...but it's a neon. S2000, hell it's sweet, but people will say..."it's a honda." Should these comments make me enjoy the car less or like the car less? does the car lose respect in my eyes, naaaaah. and that's all that REALLY matters right? sure, we love to hear a person be enthusiastic about our cars, but for those that don't know...it's ok...we still love drivin it yeah?

oh yeah...the racing heritage thing...Of course we realize it, but like you said, that's the last thing that comes to mind, when the majority of people hear "honda."

I didn't buy my S2000 as a status symbol or because of what other people might think of it, so it doesn't bother me at all when others don't know what it is.

Don't devote your life to trying to educate all of the stupid/clueless people in the world.

I find that a great deal of people fit into two distinct groups: Those that are familiar with the S2K and love it for what it is, and those who don't know what it is and quite frankly don't get excited about sports cars. Admittedly, I find it good for my ego to have someone respond favorably when I talk about my car, and I find myself intentionally trying to solicit those types of responses. But I don't take offense to those that are clueless as to what an S2K is. Even if you took them out to the parking lot and showed them, most of them probably wouldn't be impressed.

I believe that one of the reasons that Honda makes this car is to shape the "image" that Honda has as a company. If you were to ask the average person on the street what they think about Honda products, you won't get the same answer you'd get if you asked about Porche. The S2K helps broaden that perception, as does the Civic Hybrid, the Insight, and the new truck they're going to be making later this year.

In a way, I'm glad that most people don't know what it is. It attracts more attention that way.

absolutely, a lot of times I get told or asked about the car being a bmw, porche, or any kind of car you want to throw in there. Should this be a complement or what?

just yesterday, a guy looked at it, and oyu could tell he really liked it. asked how much it was (led me to believe he knew it was a honda), I told him...
he said, couldda got a bimmer for that...
I said...well, yeah..i guess I could have...but I tell ya what, that thing is a bit faster.
he smiled and said, I bet so...

open-mindedness i guess

slalom44 - I do like the when people see it, they like it, and wonder what it is!

I just don't like when I'm explaining it is a Honda they start thinking it is an econo-box.

You are all correct the important part is whether I like it or not, however it is also good to get a gripe off one's chest, thus this posting.

Thanks for all the comments.
