A problem of recognition and respect
The guys at my work constantly make fun of me about my car. They call a CHICK car, a SISSY car, etc. Kind of annoying, although I can smoke all of their cars, they think my car is just sharper looking miata. How can I defend myself?
I definitely appreciate how rare and relatively unknown our car is to the general public. However, when people ask, I don't want to start off with "it's a honda" either.
How do u quickly explain what an S2000 is?
I'm thinking of:
"a roadster"
"a convertible sports car" - if they don't know what a roadster is
"it's not a civic you stupid hick" - and if they're still puzzled

I got my '03 S2000 about a month ago. Before that I had a '93 RX7 and before that a '87 Conquest Tsi. I liked the RX7 so much that I drove it for 10 years. I never thought I would enjoy a car more. Enter the S2000. I did not buy it for what people would think, most people around here have no idea what an S2000 is. I bought it because of big smile it put on my face. However, anyone that does not think the S2000 is a true sports car, give me 5 minutes with them in the S on a curvy road and then see what they think.
I think most people don't know what a S2000 is because Honda never really advertised it. There are no TV commercials (other than the recent one with M. Andretti) for the car, so your general public don't even know such a car exists. In addition, these cars were made in limited numbers which made it even less commonly seen/known to the public.
Yeah, i actually like it when people give me shi$ about the car. It gives me a chance to let me make them look like a real choad. The bad comments usually come from people who only buy cars as status symbols or to look more attractive to the opposite sex. Most enthusiasts will appreciate any sportscar no matter what marque graces the hood.
Typical comment from non-enthusiast..."dude it's just a hoonda"
reply.."what do you drive?" <<<<lots of silence>>>>

In the US, Honda has only sold 3 sports cars(NSX, S2000, Prelude), and is mostly known for high quality family sedans and mini vans.
Porsche, until recently, only made top of the line sports cars.
Branding, or "image" is usually well deserved.
While you and I know that the S2000 is a great sports car, and a modern classic, the name Honda obviously gets a certain reaction (which is why we have to have this thread). I know that everytime I approach my car, I smile, no matter what is going on in my life, and I have had this car 2 years. I know by the looks and compliments I receive from people on the roads, that the S2000 is an amazing car.
If that is enough for you, drop a ton of knowledge on the uninformed, that way they feel very ignorant and you feel better!
And if that doesn't do enough for you, go for a drive, by yourself. I guarantee you will feel better!

If you wanted a car with instant name and model recognition, then that's what you should have bought.
That criteria wasn't even on my radar screen when I went to buy my S2000. I liked the styling, the handling, the performance, and oh yeah; the fact that it was a Honda.
I don't find myself explaining my car to anyone. If they ask what I drive, I tell them and let them draw their own conclusions.
