Problems with body shop
Clearly no one here has ever used BBB. They send a letter with all your 'claims' and if the business doesn't reply nothing happens. BBB is neither good for the customer or any business for that matter. BBB is a joke.
Destroy their shop reputation on the internet. That'll make you feel a bit better. Also, if you think you have a case, lawyer up. I don't know much about this shit but that kid of mileage is unacceptable. I dropped my car off for some body work and the trip meter didn't even go up .1 miles.
I have used BBB many times and if the business you are dealing with is reputable, BBB will greatly help. Only way I have gotten money back from dealerships before when they tried to screw me.
Obviously everyone needs an update from the OP as he hasn't given much info but me personally no matter what the reason, if the shop did in fact put 300 miles on the car, that is unacceptable.

Woah woah woah.. it's so fired up in here.. POPCORN TIME!
I think everyone should calm down first
Stop the hating and give the OP some time to find out what's wrong first from the garage, he has still yet to get in reach with them
I agree with what most people said though
If parts are coming late, you're suppose to inform the customer
If you are going to take the car out for a test drive, you're suppose to record the miles on the odometer
5 weeks more than what was anticipated is indeed a little ridiculous.
300 miles for exterior replacement seems a little too much also for a test drive.
But one thing I did not understand is why didn't the OP confront them about it when he picked up the vehicle

It is important to set expectations by making your presence known with frequent visits to the shop over the duration of the labor. At two weeks I would have been there at least once per week to check in. I cant imagine a need to drive a customer car for 300 miles for any reason without prior concent. You have every right to go after their reputation once you better understand the facts. They may be 100% in the wrong but without you fully understanding the facts you're exposing yourself.
Rob-2.. IMO OP is not so much worried that his car has 300 extra miles on it. What he needs to find out is the reason behind these miles. It's the principle of the situation. If I ever have to drop my car off for work to be done, the customer has the right to know if you are going to be putting miles on the car that aren't just from the parking lot - to inside the shop. If these are 300 miles of joy riding in someones elses car without their permission, that is theft. Am I wrong? He wouldn't be suing the shop for over 300 miles being added to his car - he would be suing the person at the shop who took his car out for a joy ride for theft of property.
My whole point here is this. The car was there to be fixed and if someone took the car for personal use - that is stealing. No different than if they went to his house and stole his car and brought it back with 300 more miles on it. Just because the shop had the key to the car, doesn't mean they have the ride to use it for personal use.
I don't know, we still need more info from OP. But if it were my car, I would want to know who stole my property for personal use without my consent.

Granted, we lacking information which the OP has.
We are not saying for us to file a claim against the shop with the BBB.
The OP can do that, if he thinks he has a case, and if he chooses to do so.
The online reviews of the shop is below average.
Their BBB rating is A+ though, with one closed claim.

Once you ask them about the reasoning behind keeping the car for 6 weeks and driving it 300 miles, only to find out they have a BS excuse or none at all, then I see no problem with letting everyone know what kind of horrible experience you had with the shop. This is a sports car, not a Camry. Chances are they drove it like a sports car (or like a jackass since they don't own it). I would be furious because there is no real way to confirm the possible damages unless it's something obvious.
99% of the time when this comes up it's a simple process issue. The shop writes an estimate and records the miles. You schedule in for a week later. Then you flip out when the mileage is 300 miles higher then what the estimate said but it's the mileage recorded during the estimate not when dropped for repairs. They never update the miles; they use the old estimate and give you a more generic invoice for payment.
Good luck and I hope that was the case this time as well.
