Saab9-3, Honda won't know if you change the rear gear set, they won't think about checking. They'll just think it's a real peppy S. You'll be out some cash, but you can always put the old gears back in and sell the new ones.

Maybe one of the local So Flo members can chime in here but I was wondering about something. During a conversation shortly after I arrived in Miami (which is why I cannot remember who told me this), several of us were discussing gear changes and one of the owners said he saw a race between relatively similar S2000's, one with a gear change, (can't recall if it was 4.44 or 4.77, I think 4.77) and the other stock. He said the former got off the line quicker but by the time they reached 1/.4-mile speeds, the stock car with the 4.10 gearing was quickly overtaking the modified S2000.
Does that make sense? Anyone care to chime in? Of course the gear change is meant for under 100-mph driveability, but I'm wondering how it affects speeds from say 50-100mph in 4th gear?

The ring and pinion set in this car will always be around 41 teeth on the ring gear and around 10 teeth on the pinion gear. If it's too far off from this, the overall size of each will be hard to fit and mesh properly in its housing. So, doing a little math, we get 41 teeth on the ring gear and 9 teeth on the pinion gear to get 4.555555555555...................... I don't think there is any other combination that will get you close to 4.56 and still be able to fit into the housing.
The next closest would be a 50 tooth ring gear with an 11 tooth pinion gear to get 4.5454545454 ............................ Anymore teeth than this is highly unlikely.

Hi, Rick. You said in your first post that the 4.56 gears will be 20% stronger than the 4.44s, and will come already treated for hardness and lubrication. Does this apply to all of the gear sets, going forward, or just the 4.56s? Also, do you expect the 4.56 gears to be any noisier, due to the increased hardness of their material? Thanks, and keep up the great work you've been doing.

Just because you leased it does not mean you can't mod it. Remember you have THREE choices at the end of your lease.
1. Give it back
2. Pay it off
3. Sell it off. With the gearset, you should see a fairly decent return on your investment.

Besides, even if you hand it back to Honda, they are NEVER going to know (or even really care) if you have swapped out the gearset.

Just for kicks, I was playing around in Gran Turismo 3 and was playing around with the final drives. Between 4.10 and 4.77 the difference was negligible for the 400m take off.

Hey Rick. Just wondering if you received my email I sent last weekend about the new gear set? I paid for the 4.44 set and yellow box about 7 weeks ago and you told me they were depleted. But you also said I could wait about 6 weeks for the new and better ones that were going through R&D at the time. So I agreed to wait for them because I am going FI very soon and need all the strength I can get but haven't heard anything from you yet. If these gears (4.56)you are mentioning on this thread are the set you were telling me about, I was just wondering if they had been sent out yet or what was going on with them.
Thanks,
Chadd

I wouldn't put much stock in a "video game".
In the "real world", ItalianBuckwheat has already proven nearly 0.5 sec gain 0-60 with 4.44's.

Originally posted by Saab9-3 BTW, if I got a 4.56 or a 4.77, should I get the reinforced pumpkin?
Unless you go FI, there should be no reason why you would need to go with a re-inforced pumpkin unless you routinely do clutch dumps. Even with FI, the stock pumpkin functions quite well, again, unless you routinely do clutch dumps. However, if you do and it'll help you sleep better, then sure, go ahead.

The production of the 4.56's have not quite even started yet, so they can't be in the "mail".
