Purchased 02 S2000 w/ engine light ON! Help!!
Hi all,
I just purchased my used 02 S2000 without a Catalytic Converter, the 02 sensor is still attach to the CRACK-OUT down pipe the last owner installed, but the engine light is still turn on. I've tried resetting the computer by unplug the battery, the engine light will turn off for about 20 mintues then comes back on again. It sound really annoying and rattle when VTEC hit. Does anyone have any suggestion? Also, i'm planning on getting the Spoon Sports N1 exhaust later, and i notice that it comes with the test pipe but will the engine light turn on since the CAT is removed?
Thankx

If you bought it from a dealer that way, bring it back and bitch. I think it is a federal law that dealers have to sell cars with the catalytic converter. Not having that usually fawks things up. -Ken
OBD II cars have two O2 sensors - usually, the second one sniffs to see if the system is functioning OK (it checks the first you might say), while the first one is used for accurate readings closer to the exhaust manifold. A missing or damaged sensor will surely trigger the MIL.
On my car, even though i run a catted hi-po X-pipe ahead of the catbacks, I programmed the chip to ignore the second set of O2 sensors. I also removed the top speed limiter, and the irritating upshift light that helped keep the gas guzzler tax lower. It bothered me having a little arrow pop up saying "Shift like Granny now!". This is America - I will shift when I dam well please.
Removing the cat is just plain dumb - aside from the tree-hugger stuff, modern cats flow so well that there is little to be gained - now it may have been that the previous owner melted his cat by some bad tuning - I would have the car throughly checked out by a good mechanic or this may be just the beginning of your woes. Good luck!

You just bought a car that cannot be legally driven on the street. I hope you plan on towing it to the racetrack.
