So I spoke to the Florida DMV, and they confirmed that I need to pay 6% sales tax before I'm even issued a temporary tag to drive it out of State. I find that ridiculous because I'd have to pay another 8% sales tax in my home state of California. Is there anything I can do to avoid this other than having the car shipped to California?

From the Florida DMV:

What is the purpose for issuance of temporary license plates?

Florida law provides for a variety of legal uses of temporary license plates. The most common is by motor vehicle dealers to allow customers who don't have a license plate to transfer to be able to drive their newly purchased vehicle off the lot. The license plates are valid for 30 days, which gives dealers ample time to apply for titles and registrations for their customers.

If you are not a dealer, but you have acquired another vehicle and transferred your license plate from your old vehicle to the new vehicle, a temporary license plate may be obtained from the tax collector's office so you may demonstrate your old vehicle while it is for sale.

Non-residents also are eligible to secure a temporary license plate for "in-transit" purposes if they purchase a vehicle in Florida and want to drive it back home. However, proof of insurance (from Florida or home state) and sales tax in the amount required by the home state must be paid. If you feel you may be eligible for a temporary license plate, inquire through your local tax collector's office or the regional DMV office that serves your area.
Looks like they're going to ask for the full CA vehicle sales tax up front.

I finally got through to the DMV in California, and they said that I only need to pay the difference if I paid sales tax in Florida so I'm happy.

Now my worries are the hurricane ripping through the Gulf Coasts. I'm scheduled to pick it up on Tuesday next week. Hopefully by then the hurricane will be gone, but I'm worried about the flood/aftermath and road blockages.

That's awesome news! Good luck with the purchase, and be sure to take pics along the way.

As above, when you pass through Arizona let us know. There are regular meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

1. What maintenance should I have performed before embarking on the drive back home? I'll get an oil change and check the tire pressures, but other than that any more tips?

2. The owner is including the Tonneau cover. Is it going to fit inside the small trunk? Will it eat all my space?

3. How does buying a car out of state work? Do I just get temporary tags in Florida and I should be good to drive back home? I did my research but it doesn't hurt to have more information.

4. Any good places I should stop by as far as food or scenery? I'll be taking the I-95 up Florida to the I-10 West all the way home.

I'm extremely excited to be part of the club if all goes well and the deal goes through. Thanks in advance guys!
Where in Florida are you planning on purchasing this S2000?

The flooding should be less when you make your drive - you should be probably wed- thurs by the time you get to the harder hit areas. Might want to check with AAA to see about road conditions - No, I do not work for AAA, but have been a member since before I could drive.

I strongly suggest you ask for someone from the Miami region to go check out the car... Before you buy an airplane ticket.

Yea I should have done that before hand, but I've already booked my plane ticket. The car seems to be in good condition from the pictures, but I'll see for myself next week. If it's completely beat to hell, I'll just chalk it up to a lesson learned.

If the I-10 is flooded I'll have to take the long way and go through the I-20
