So the simple fact is that it makes no difference if the engine is on or off. My guess is that honda wants to make certain that you are not driving and trying lower the top.

Lowering the top with engine off is perfectly fine for the battery. Claims that having the engine off will hurt the battery are garbage.

The only time that this could be an issue is if the car has sat so long the battery is nearly discharged already. Even then I'm not convinced that there would be sufficent power to crank the engine even if you didn't lower the top.

Moral of the story is not to worry, engine on/engine off you'll be fine with raising or lowering the top

 

I have a Hawker battery and with the car off for several hours, my battery's resting voltage is around 12V. If I operate the top, not only does this operate both windows, but also usually the radio would be on and all the ignition circuits are on, the voltage goes to 11.2V. You decide.
ps. I always try to do the top with the engine running.

 

To prevent damage to the top whilst moving, Honda made a speed sensor and made you engage the handbrake.

To prevent you from operating the top whilst the engine is running - Honda did nothing (except for one line in the owners manual?)

If there was a chance of some serious damage occuring, surely a safety feature would be built in so that the top can only be operated when the engine is not running.

I have never raised or lowered the top with the engine off.

Honda is stupid don't listen to them. Look at this stupid car they made for us!
