Default Question about buying out of state!

Hey guys I have been reading posts in this forum about s2ks being cheapers in other states than thier own. I have been looking around myself and find that s2ks are cheaper in some other states than texas. i wanted to ask you guys how the procedure exactly works when buying a car from a different state? if i bring the car back to texas are there some additional taxes that i would have to pay to register the car? and if i buy it from i.e. ma then im guessing i dont need to register it in ma because ill be living in texas. so i am guessing that i only pay taxes in tx right? plz share ur knowledge thanks !

Correct. You pay no MA tax, you just pay TX taxes. Also S2000 is a 50-state car meaning you don't have to worry about emissions standards for different states.

I bought my car in Oregon and I live in California. What happens is when you buy your car, the dealer will call your local DMV in advance to find out how much tax and licensing is. When you get there, he will charge you your own state tax and licensing based on how much your local DMV told him. Meanwhile, you get a 10 day permit so you can drive the car around. The dealer will then cut a check and mail it to your local DMV for that same amount, so that when you take your car to your local DMV, the money is already there, you just need to fill out some papers and go through the inspection. They will make you get a smog check as well (which you will of course pass). After getting the smog check you bring the certificate back to the DMV and finish the process. They give you your registration sticker and license plate right there.

The Oregon dealer told me that if I had paid for my car in cash (I financed it), then they would have sold me the car w/o doing all the registration work. It would have been my own responsibility to go to my DMV and pay and all that. Since it is financed they are required by the bank to make sure that the car does indeed get registered.

I live in NY and bought my car in PA. Here's my experience. Bought the car for 31K paid 70 dollars more because the dealer had to give me temporary registration, a 30 day plate, and some other stuff. $70 isn't much so I didn't question it. Came home to NY and registered the car in NY on the 23rd day (I think) paid the DMV the taxes, felt like another down payment, and that was it.

Are you buying new or used? I bought mine used miles and showed a trade paying taxes only on the difference (in my home state).
