Question about how to make the MY03 like the MY04's torque?

Default Question about

Question: with all this talk about the added torque of the 04, what weight reduction could be done to an 00-03 to net the same acceleration effects? For example, I would think that throwing a set of lighter wheels, lighter exhaust/header combined with the power gains from those mods would offset the extra torque of the 04 such that the 00-03 car would pull away from a stock 04 (of course modding the 04 would probably net more gains.....but we have yet to see how tuneable the 04 is).

Since we haven't seen any real world results/tests yet confirmed it may actually be that the 04 doesn't pull away from the 00-03's at all. But to answer your question yes you could go with all that you mentioned, although the power gains would be minimal, and also consider a lighter battery and removing the spare tire in the rear. The one thing many people hear feel makes the biggest difference is the addition of some 4.44, 4.57, or 4.77 gears.

In addition to what you mentioned, an aftermarket intake (AEM or similar, or PRM) would also shed a couple of pounds by getting rid of the stock airbox & plumbing. You could also get rid of your spare tire & tool kit if you are brave, as well as any of the trunk liner.
You could also consider a light weight battery. Some lightweight aftermarket seats (as the stock ones are around 40lbs each, I think).
Search for posts by "Krazik". He had his car down below 2300 lbs (though it is slightly higher in race trim with the top on & roll bar in). And his car is not exactly streetable. But, I believe one of his posts had a list of the things he had removed and the approximate weight he shed with each item.

Edit: I should've read all of Honda606's post, before I posted. Sorry for duplicating some info.

doing what u said deffinetly will keep u in front of those new s2000's
u wont belive the difference it makes with and without a passenger...weigh plays a big role in a cars preformance
and with the exhaust and header...torque still wont be better ...but u will be faster....and lighter

Well, that counts me out!

Seriously, why worry about it. I know the numbers suggest that the MY04 should be stronger than the earlier versions and I'd expect that to be true but in real world operations, I'm not sure that the difference will be that dramatic. Of course, I could be wrong. The only S I've driven was a MY02 with 30k miles on it and I came away from the test drive wondering what all this hype about no torque was about. Maybe I didn't get the car in a situation where that so called failing would be obvious, but I thought the car performed very nicely, all in all.

You can buy a LOT of gasoline for what whose modification will cost. Personally, I'd rather be driving!

Given the numbers and charts that we have been given by Honda, it appears that the '04 wheel torque is nearly exactly the same as '00-'03 cars with 4.44 gears. They even have similar redline speeds. The main difference is that the '04 5th and 6th gears are changed so you don't have really high engine speeds on the highway.

So don't worry about weight reduction, exhaust, etc. - just get Ricks' 4.56 gears.

At least, that's my theory until I can examine UL's dyno comparison that should be out this week.
