Default Question regarding tires width

Hey guys, I'm currently running stock right now and I'm looking to purchase new tires, BF Goodrich g-Force.

My stock set up is FRONT: 215/45R-17
REAR: 245/40R-17

I want to go a bit wider for better handling, i know it will weigh more, but i don't mind.

Can I go w/ 220 front and 250 rear? What would be the consequences for going wider? more noise? rubbing? And what's the widest i can go running stock?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim, I have 235s front and 255s in the back and they don't rub at all. My car is lowered 1.5 inches and my rear wheels are 17x9s. They're Volk TE37s and I think the offset is either 63 or 68, i can't remember. I know some guys have 275s in the back that don't rub. It totally depends on the offset of your wheels.

If you're putting wider tires on stock rims i think it's going to look silly. I seriously doubt putting wider tires on your stock rims is going to help the handling of your car. Just my 2 cents

I agree for the most part if you want the best scenario, however you can go a size wider on your stock wheels for added rubber to the ground if thats all you want and they will look fine, no bulging over the rim lip as the stock sizes are pulled in a bit already from the factory.

The new CR has the same width wheels as the stock AP2's but is running a size wider at 235/255's if I am not mistaken.

WAIT! WAIT!! Before you pull the trigger go check REAL sizes, not just the rated size. I ran the KDs and found the 255s were about 1/2" NARROWER than the stock rubber.

Since the 225 fronts were basically the same width as the 205 stockers I ended up with terminal oversteer.

As far as width goes, I am running a little over 9" wide on the front and just over 11" on the rear so you have plenty of room IF you have the proper offset for much wider rubber

Anybody knows whats the offset of front/rear stock AP2 wheels ?
I've read some posts saying that OEM tires of AP1 have wider contact patch compared to same size from other manufacturers, does that apply to AP2 ? and how do I know if I am going non OEM 215/245 that they are the same width ?
I do believe only the AP1 So2's were made specific for the s2000 and are wide for their size, this shouldn't be a variable with the AP2 Bridgstones, however I think Bridgstones typicly run a tad wider then most anyway.

Sorry I don't know the offset for the Ap2 wheels but i'm sure you can perform a search here and find this info.

Most performance tire companies I have found will give you an exact measurement to there specific tires. Go to the manufacture websites, grab a pen and paper and start comparing sizes. This is the best way I know of since you will be hard pressed to have them all mounted up in front of you for comparison.
