Questions about hood condition and general condition.
Hey all, looking to become a part of the S2000 community and trying to find the best condition within my price range (around max 20k). This one dealer's car looks to be in good condition but I thought I'd see what you all think. Thanks ahead for any comments you can provide. The dealer said that they replaced the hood with a sierra hood and also said the original lining didn't have any leaks.
What do y'all think about this? It's near 20k with 100k miles.
Hey all, apologies for the terminology confusion, I was using Hood and Roof interchangeably to refer to the actual fabric, and the lining to refer to the rubber parts that prevent leakage and allow the car to seal itself and close properly. As far as I know the car wasn't garage kept, it's located in the Southeast (currently TN), I don't know where it was before that. The Carfax states no issues and the car has ~100k miles
My main concerns were the rubber on the driver side looking like it's torn up, is that just the rubber being old or is it actually like messed up in any ways? I also wanted to check for after market parts or even missing OEM parts, I can see the intake has been changed out but past that I'm not sure.
I'm attaching some more pictures that show the general condition of the car, if there's any more requests I'll see what pictures I can get.
Looks pretty decent shape. Odd that the new soft top (hood?) has a plastic window. Also odd that the seals leak. Overall undercarriage looks pretty good. Aftermarket intake but that's not an issue. It just depends on your tastes/budget.
Those tires are crap. It looks like any repairs the dealer made were bottom dollar. I'm going to guess the plastic window top was cheaper. I wonder if those are Honda seals or some aftermarket stuff. They're pretty pricey to replace. I'd also have a hard time trusting that they installed the top decently. My car had a recently installed soft top and the installer screwed up the black trim piece on the back side of the top that caused it to leak. That cost me a few hundred.
Looks good bones but some things to pick apart. It's a 20 y/o car and each example has their stuff at this point. Otherwise, it's probably not going to be $20k. This one is $20k + tires + a risk the soft top leaks.
Car appears to be a 2001 (no clock on the instrument panel that I can see) so the plastic rear window is "correct" for that year.
Mileage is not a real issue -- car is a Honda -- but there are several/many items that can be addressed with later OEM parts. I'd want a compression/leakdown test made in my presence and a valve adjustment although the AP1 engines are not known for bad valves -- they are known for cracked valve retainers.
I don't know if a rusty VTEC solenoid is normal -- my '06 isn't.
Again the VIN tags, or lack of them, will provide more information.
The undersie looks O.K. to me. The VTEC solenoid on my 2002 also rusts a little bit. The tyres are cheap Junk and dont belong on a proper sportscar. The dont belong on any car, to be precise.
Was the car serviced regullary? Oil and filters changed, Valves adjusted?
In the uk they call the roof the hood. The hood is the bonnet. Fenders are wings.
This car appears to be lhd, so its a mystery where op might be. A place that uses uk lingo, but lhd. Maybe some places in Canada use this lingo?
Europe also exists....not just UK.
But anyway, the OP is in the US.
OP....car looks good overall. Maybe take it in for a PPI. Definitely do an AP2 valve retainer swap if you do buy it. It has an intake which kinda sucks (no pun intended). But besides that, looks clean and stock.
Why are people under the impression that the roof was changed? Did I miss that being confirmed? Yes, the seal on the driver side window sill is torn. Yes...that will leak water. Its replaceable, but expensive.
I would try and haggle a bit, but dealers don't really haggle today. Try anyway. For $18-19K, this car would be good.
Remember, you'll need to pay dealer fees and taxes. Maybe keep looking to see if you can find private sellers or better deals?
