I just received my shift knob from Rick's and it looks great! I got the pearl aluminum shift knob with the engraved shift pattern. I love the way it sits on the shifter and how it looks.

But, when I went to put it on I can't get the shift pattern to align correctly. Every time I tried to hand tighten it, the pattern always ends up upside down. I didn't want to try to over tighten it to adjust the pattern and run the risk of stripping the knob. It seems that the only way to get the pattern to line up is to screw it on (hand tight) then back it off about a half a turn, but then it's not very secure and will rotate around when driving.

The question is, should I tighten it then back it off to get the pattern to line up then use locktite secure the knob? I've read some threads where other people have used locktite, but was curious if anyone had problems aligning the shift pattern and still keeping the knob tight on the shifter.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Once you get it aligned, use a wrench and tighten the nut under the knob, it's used to lock it in place.

 

Use Blue threadlocker of any manufacture, line it up the way you want it, and do not touch it for at least 24 hours so it can set properly. You will have absolutely no problems whasoever doing this - I can attest to that personally.

 

No, the nut cannot be used with the Voodoo knob.

 

You should apply good amount of locktite to the shift knob BEFORE you you screw it on. Allign the pattern then leave it alone for at least overnight or a day if possible.

 

Thanks for the all responses. I went back out to the car to try one more time and I still can get the pattern to line up. So I'll pick up some locktite tomorrow and do it right.

Would it be more effective to apply the locking compound directly to the thread of the shifter rather than the inside of the knob or apply it to both the shifter and the inside of the knob?

 

I forgot to ask. Any suggestions on which thread locking compound to buy?

I know Road Rage suggests any blue thread lock. Does that include locktite or a specific type?

Go to a Home Depot or Lowes and you should be able to find that. Blue is the strength of the thread locker.

 

As the email installation instructions indicate (I send an email with the instructions when each order ships), you spread a few drops of blue Loctite on the threads, screw the knob all the way down, then back it out to where you want it aligned. That will lock it in place, but a quick, hard snap of the wrist will enable you to loosen the knob.

I don't want to go on a rant here, but does anyone read the emails we send?
