They both seem to run the same times down the track. They are pretty equal. The nut behind the wheel is the deciding factor.

The most recent "Battle at 10,000 RPMs" Best Motoring/Hot Version video tested a bunch of S2ks. There was one test that pit a AP1 against an AP2 and the red MCR S2k.

In that test the AP2 consistently lapped the Maze Circuit faster than the AP1. Much of the credit was given to the revised suspension tuning and the increase in tire size/contact patch. I noticed in the video that the 04 JDM S2k was still redlining at 9k and found out that that the 2.2L engine was not released in Japan in MY04 the way it was here in the states. (i believe it debuted in 2005?)

I know that the 2.2L AP2 and the 2.0L AP1 turn in nearly identical acceleration numbers...
so I would venture to say that the same driver could turn in a faster lap with the AP2 thus making it the quicker car.

yeah but do you have the kick in an Ap2 like the Ap1 9,200 RPM's is fun. It really depends on what you are looking for the Ap1 is more of a drivers car

On more than one occasion I've heard people say the "AP1 is more of a driver's car"; however, I've never understood why that is.

IMO the AP2 is tuned more for the driver because it is much easier to drive at 9/10ths up to it's limit. Even professional drivers struggle to extract faster laptimes in the AP1 because of the nervous nature of the rear end.

Don't get me wrong ... I began my luv affair with the S2k in an AP1. Frankly, the AP1 scares me a bit tho... I've had quite a bit of wheel time in my friend's MY02 and I must confess there has been a handful of times that I've felt like a hero when taking a corner and then ended up facing the other way when trying to maximize my cornering speed. Both my MY02 owning friend and I feel it is much easier to go balls out in my MY05.

So, if by "driver's car" they mean that it takes a much higher level of skill to get the same result then I guess I could agree. Otherwise, I would say that the AP2 is no less of "a driver's car" than the AP1.
