Radar Detection Information
How about semi-hardwire. I ran the extension from the outlet by putting the wire behind the carpeting on the tunnel, so it's out of the way. This setup give's me instant access to the on/off power switch near the shift lever. It allows me to remove the detector with the wire still attached and place it in the web pouch; or I can remove the wire and toss it in the hidden compartment. The test's I saw when I bought mine, 8500, suggested the cordless was not quite as effective. That was a couple years ago.
I use the Escort 8500 and hook the power cable around or under the emergency brake and plug it in to the lighter.
It looks good that way. It lays down on the dash and straight back from the brake handle to the lighter.
The part I like best is when it sounds off I simply move my elbow backwards and bump the remote mute switch.
The other part that is nice when I park and pull the brake handle the cord springs up to remind me to pull it from the windshield and slide into the passenger storage net.
Escort is the only brand for me. I continue to by the latest model every time they become available for the past 10 years.

You guys with the windshield mounted detectors are forgetting one important detail: The higher up the detector is, the sooner (read BETTER) you'll pick up a threat. In my opinion, you need to have the detector up as close to the headliner as possible, mine is roughly at the same level as my rear-view mirror, that way I have the maximum lead time to react when it goes off. Anyone with a detector mounted mid-windshield or lower stands a good chance of seeing the cop with their eyes before their detector goes off, at which point it's too late. Just my opinion... Oh and one more thing, hardwired is the only way to go. Really an easy project to do also.
djohnston,
On the whole, hot wiring and higher is likely the better way to go. That's what I've done in my other cars. Originally I did my setup in the S as a temporary one but I soon discovered it was just as effective.
Question, what do you do when you have the top down and pull into some place, like a gas station for example. I'm always a little concerned someone can easily reach over, unplug it from the mount, and be gone. It only costs a couple bucks to order a new cord from the factory. In my case just before pulling in, I unplug it from the mount and stick it into the pouch with the cord attached. It's out of sight and out of the way for a quick snatch in one easy motion. After paying it only takes a second to remount it.
