I have an '02 and do not experience this when the door is opened.
Either the 02's with the new leather console are wider which prevents the door from hitting the knee, or I sit far enough back where my knee dos not come close to the door when it opens.

Only bad thing is you'll be replacing the rubber band frequently because "normal" rubber bands disintegrate quickly. Try a motor belt from a broken down VCR or Tape Player if you have one, or go to a place like radio shack and buy a pack of assorted. They last much longer, especially in the heat of a car.

The problem with this is that rubber bands dry up in a short time and will snap. You probably have to find a small neoprene O ring instead.

Is it difficult to just close the door? Good idea, nevertheless.

Great innovation. I don't know how many times I've slammed my knee on that dastardly door.
