This is happening in a lot of places this year. They are not lady bugs technically but some kind of beetle. Anyway, they are harmless. They will usually try (and success) to get inside for the winter. They also congregate on the warm side of the house preferably on light surfaces (i.e. white siding). Don't smash them though because they emit a foul odor.
