Default The real picture

We all know that many S's are stolen, but never have made the "Most Stolen" car lists. The reason is that these polls consider the total number of cars stolen, and as there are very few S2000s, we never make the list.

A new poll appeared in The Boston Globe that counts the number of cars per capita that are stolen, that is to say: the number of cars per hundred, or in this case, the number of cars per thousand that are stolen. THE S2000 IS NUMBER 5, at 5.6 cars stolen per thousand cars. Number 1 is the Audi 8 (if I remember correctly) with 2 cars out of 227 being stolen. Other cars stolen more than the S2000, in order are: Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, BMW 5 series, can't remember what the others are. So, the S2000 IS one of the most stolen cars in the U.S., you can remember this when you are begging for special parking from your spouse, valet, et. al.

Any convertible is probably easy to steal. One of those things that insurance is great for. I am lucky enough that I work in a secure facility and then garage my S when at home.

The only thing that helps us is that the demand for S2000 motors for swaps into other cars isn't as hot as say RSX/Civic K20's are. The downfall is the seats are the biggest target for that. Fortunately I park only in safe locations and have comprehensive insurance.

My s2000 is usually in my garage. I drive it to work maybe one or two days a week on average and rack up miles on the Genesis Coupe instead. My work parking lot is pretty secure, I don't know of any cars having been stolen from the parking lot. When I take my car to lunch I park where I can see it from the window. If it still gets stolen somehow, that's what I have comprehensive insurance for. Having a hardtop should reduce the likelihood of the s2k being stolen since the thief can't quietly cut the top to enter the vehicle, although it's still just a picked lock or broken window away from being stolen, but that is true for any car.

It gets real scary when you do the math - assuming there are 30,000 S's left in the U.S. - 5.6 per thousand equals 168 S2000s are stolen each year - yikes!

It would be cool to see a map of where S2000's have been stolen in the US. My guess is they would all be clustered around big cities like LA, DC, etc. This is what I love about living in the country...most thieves avoid thefts outside of town because they are about 100X more likely to be found by the homeowner's dog(s) and/or shot by the homeowner.

I owned my S for 6 and a half years until it was stolen last month. Lived in Chicago for 4 years; 2 years on the south side, 2 years just west of downtown, and moved north to start off my fifth year into a nicer neighborhood and it gets stolen within a month. I woke up and looked outside my window where I parked and it was gone. Police found it 4 days later, top slashed, steering column smashed, car was stripped. Sad times, but I had full coverage on it. My coworker saw the article on Forbes.com today and had to show me. I had no idea it was even in the top 10! Hopefully next year I get another one (along with a gun...jk...maybe jk)
