Default Rear Wheel Well Coating

This may be the wrong forum but i was hoping for a more inteligent response. When i was cleaning my car over the weekend i noticed that the black, rubber like finish on the surface of the rear wheel well was absent in a few places. It doenst seem that its fragile in other areas just missing here or there. My main question is should i be concerned as two why the finish is missing and should respray the area with some rust proofing paint. Thanks and please move this if need be.

It's undercoating, and nothing to worry about. There is paint over the metal.

The metal underneath this should already be painted/primed (it should have SOMETHING on it). That coatings main job is to take the hits from road debris that your tires will inevitably fling into your wheel well. You can get undercoating at autoparts stores...

Overtime, things like this are expected. There are many alternatives to respraying or reapplying similar materials to the underbody of the car.

I think there is even a layer of zinc phosphate below the paint as well. It's when you get a clean scratch to the bare metal that becomes troublesome. If you respray undercoating yourself be careful not to plug drainage holes, as this could trap water and promote rusting elswhere on the car. I have been told you can plug them with toothpick or golf tee's or something before you spray, them remove them when finished. Good luck.
