Your 02 S2K has a rev limiter, like your Civic, but on the S2K it is at 9K. If your car is running OK and has not been modified, I suspect that you revved to the 9K rev limiter when vtec kicked in. Drive safely and enjoy vtec.

Nah you won't damage anything if you hit rev limiter. Just don't make a habit of it. And drive safe

Btw, I think its funny how people think a 7K RPM rev limiter is low. Most cars (non-honda) have rev limiters anywhere from 5500 rpm to 6200 rpm...

as long as it didn't rev past redline as a result of a downshift, you are fine.

Do you think the rear wheels came off the ground? Did you have 'er at WOT? If so you might have over sped a bit and it would be hard say how much, if any, damage was sustained.

If the car is running fine, with no differences in performance, I would run it easy for a little while and see if anything pops up. If it runs fine, after that, let 'er rip.

Good Luck

I still dont think that any damage should've been done... even if the rear tires came off the ground, the engine will not rev past 9K simply because fuel would be cut off by the ECU at 9K even if he was on the gas and the tires were spinning freely. You can go jack up your car or put it on a lift, and punch the gas, and youll see that it'll bounce off of rev limiter... (actually dont go and do that I was just giving you an example, lol).

Unless he somehow mangaged to GAIN speed in the AIR, he would not have over revved his 2nd gear... The second his rear tires left the ground, he would've started to slow down which in turn would mean that his RPM in 2nd gear would be LOWER than it was when he left the ground.

So with these 2 points in mind ( 1) ECU not letting car over rev even if tires are spinning freely 2) The car cannot GAIN speed in the air) I think its safe to assume that the did no damage to the car...

Now if he has some crazy wing and some propellors or turboprop engines that I don't know of, then I'm not sure

assuming the car is either in neutral or accelerating in a gear, you won't go past about 9150 rpms. (this varies a little) Though it "looks" like you might be going past that, you aren't. The tach goes to 9k, and then that area of "red" you see, is actually a shift light in a sense. It flashes about 2-3 times before you hit the rev limiter, indicating you should shift. I actually use it when I'm racing, as I have it timed I can shift exactly at 2 blinks and into the next gear.

Again, this doesn't cause damage, as that's what a rev limiter (rev limiter is different from redline, by the way) is for. To prevent an over-rev.

Now, that aside, let's say you are in 3rd and shift at 90mph, expecting to go into 4th gear, but accidentally put it into 2nd.... this will cause a mechanical overrev, and THAT can cause some MAJOR damage.

however, accelerating to redline will not. unless you do it a lot and hold it at rev limiter. this causes tremendous stress on the rods from the piston deceleration. fortunately we have a forged bottom end, including the rods, so that helps.
