Manufacturers will set the revlimiter at some point below the point at which the engine will fail as a safety/reliability measure. Therefore there is some in-built buffer against problems.
I have seen mentioned that it is possible to raise the revlimiter to around 10000rpm. I'm not sure if these engines have had additional headwork etc done to be able to reach this number without failing.

I think they can be raised to 10k without too much problem, but I know that the weak point on our car is the valvetrain at that speed. our bottom end can take it, but the valves/springs cannot.
