repossessed car registration question, please read. (kinda long)
i've been working on getting my car back for sometime and it seemed it worked out okay.
now since i "re- financed" my car, i have to register it again.
re- financing and a whole lot of other jazz went through between me, honda finance, the dealer, and the towing company.
i re- financed the car, so the car's name belongs back to me but they wouldn't let me take the car because it's not registered.
the dealer and the finance company wouldn't let me register it myself, rather they want the dealer to do it.
the dealer (MAJESTIC HONDA, RI) first went through registration process for over a week, and they want $2000 registration fee, including ri sales tax. (or at least so they say.)
after a week, since the buyer is located in ny (buying it under my father's company) i have to register it in ny and they gonna do it for me- still $2000 and now it has been another week.
all the paper work and signed applications, they don't want me to bring it to them myself. they say i have to do it via regular "mail." hence, more time consuming.
so am i missing something? or are they just f$#king with me?
i'm paying the towing company $20 "parking fee" a day since i re- financed my car.

i just spoke with them (majestic ri the dealer) this morning and now they say they can't register the car because it's insured in NJ.
i have to insure it in NY in order to register it in NY? is this true?

Not on your life. Insurance from one state is valid for every other state, pursuant to the Interstate Compacts (agreements between states). The insurance is valid no matter where you go and, although NY won't like it much, you just have to stick to your guns. Tell them that you reviewed the mandatory financial responsibility act (after you do, preferably), and it makes no mention of NY-only insurance. Then ask them to send you a copy of the regulation or policy that requires you to do so.
Also, regardless of what the DMV says, if you CAN take your car directly to a NY DMV location, do. You cannot measure the added impact of actually being there, in person, in the way of the lazy ass DMV clerk (sometimes helping you is just the path of least resistance). Do expect to spend a couple of days.
I have helped register a car bought from a dealer in one state, after it had been sold through two other states, registered it in a fourth state, while it was insured in a fifth. It was not easy, but it is feasible (there are usually some tricks for reducing your tax liability, too). PM me if you want.
