Default Requesting xviper help :) - changed clutch and tranny but still stiff

XViper, would have PMed you but thought this might be helpful to others. Obviously other posters are more than welcome to provide info but I think the board has unanimously declared xviper the transmission problem specialist.

I developed the 1-2 grind last weekend. Leading up to this, I noticed my stick feeling a little stiffer than it first did (bought it April 7th with 58K Kms on it). For background, I double clutch/rev match every downshift and I'm quite smooth with it.

After reading through a bunch of posts, I decided to have my clutch fluid and transmission oil changed. The shop put in Endless brake fluid dot 4 for the clutch and Motul 6100V for the transmission.

While I don't have the grind (only did it 3-4 times last weekend) the transmission still does not seem very smooth going from 1-2 and down shifting from 3-2, even with a perfect rev match. 5-6 is still relatively stiff but not more than it was when I first got it. No grinding, just more effort to put it into gear than I remember it being when I first bought it. Could the grinding that happened last weekend have damaged my syncros?

Any advice? My favourite part of the car is the transmission and now it's not nearly as rewarding to drive. Thanks a whole lot in advance.

When was the list time you had the differential fluid changed?

Believe it or not when I changed the stock fluid out with Mobil 1 I noticed a change in the "feeling" of the car. I changed it about five days before I did the transmission fluid and both together made a nice, noticeable difference. If you haven't done the diff fluid in awhile, or don't know if it was done recently prior to you buying the car, I would suggest you consider it. It's only $10 or so and can't hurt anything to try.

Also, you may want to PM a moderator and have them move this to "Under the Hood." I know XViper would see it there for sure and you would probably get more replies there.

How about the allignment of your stick with the gearbox? If that is upset you will have a hard time shiftting no matter what you do.

Have you been using this Motul tranny fluid till now? I'm curious why you went with this. In our climate, the Honda MTF seems to be a very good all round fluid and some of the aftermarket brands and types have not been very effective for us. Just curious. Notchiness and shifting stiffness can sometimes be attributed to tranny fluid.
The clutch fluid change is not a cure all but it should help in some cases. You may still have other issues but not knowing how your tranny feels, it's hard to say if what you experience is out of the ordinary.
Where does your clutch engage as you lift it off the floor. Is it still quite close? If so, you might need adjustments in the pedal area so as to disengage the clutch more fully when the pedal is on the floor. You may still have a transmission issue - very hard to say. You may also fall into the catagory of having a car that needs the base of the stick lubed as was mentioned by "RT" in another thread. This worked for him and supposedly, there is a TSB on this. Go to this thread and scroll down to see the TSB's posted:

ps. "gernby" seems to be the tranny grind expert.

thanks for the replies guys.

Went with Motul because the guy at the shop that races his S2000 said it is best for cars that do a few track days once in a while and allow the car to warm up properly on the street.

As for the feel of the tranny, the stiffness is really limited to 1-2 and 3-2. Sometimes it will go smooth on the 3-2 when I match perfectly but will still be stiff at times despite matching perfectly.

My clutch engagemnt is about 1.5-2 inches off the ground

I bought the car used and the 1-2 grind tsb was done.

Thanks for your comments.

This might be just on the edge of "acceptable". Make sure your carpet is not bunched up under your pedal and maybe consider moving your seat up one more notch so as to ensure full clutch dis-engagement. OR, perhaps consider putting in another 0.5 - 1 inch more of play.

Your notchiness may in fact be due to the fluid. A fluid that is good for track use might give the feel you have during day to day driving. This was the case with another Calgary owner when he tried the Syncromesh fluid that was talked about at the time. He hated it so much that I took it out for him after two weeks.

It sounds like you've got a pretty handle on the grind and tranny issues with what you've done. If you can't tolerate the notchiness, maybe go back to the Honda MTF and see if this is better for you.

Since you have a MY'00, do as was suggested about changing the diff fluid if this has not been done yet. I plan to change all my fluids (except engine coolant) annually now. My car is working really well now and I want to keep it that way.

Does it improve after driving for a bit? The Motul fluid might be too thick and that might cause the notchy feel. I would switch back to Honda MTF and see since really the Honda MTF is probably the best all weather range tranny fluid.

HI, I seem to have the same problem. I bought my s2000 used and the guy I bought it from said he changed a brand new clutch. The clutch engages about 2 inches off the ground and shifting is very notchy and stiff. Xviper, you seem to know alot about s2000, how about I pay you to take a look at my car? Where exactly are you located? YOu can PM me if you like to..thanks
