“VTEC just kicked in, yo” is a cliché of time eternal, a mock-worthy sentiment among Honda nerds that has transcended automotive culture. But when you're roaring along in a Honda S2000 and watching that digital slider hit 6,000 rpm, every amber light glowing one after the next, and then the roar bumps up like imaginary turbochargers kicking in, a sonorous noise that seems just a bit louder, just a bit more frenetic -- when you roar up to 6,000 rpm the first time, it will catch you off-guard: whoa, was it always this loud? But from then on you'll always drive with your eyes peeled towards those glorious six ticks, the second time, the third time, the 1,294th time. When the cam lobes switch over, it's the S2000 as God and Shigeru Uehara intended.
