Like I said, it won't destroy a strong, well built engine but I'm guessing the "clearances" I spoke of are larger than they need to be now. If it were a weak or old engine, who knows?

Damn... I've 46k miles on mine and I didn't know revving in neutral was a no-no... I feel sooo dirty.

I never knew this, sometimes I just rev up to 9 instead of honk my horn if someone's holding up traffic

It has to do with what the parts of the engine has to go through AFTER the power stroke. With load, all the little gaps in all those "clearances" are closed and stay that way. With no load, all those little gaps slam back into each other at terrific speeds on every stroke thereafter. Noone will tell you that this will kill your engine BUT it certainly will not do it any good in the long run if it is repeated over and over again. And remember, we're not talking about a little wussy revving here. We're talking about near redline revs where the piston speeds are staggering.
unfortunately I done that 2 or 3 times already
is good to learn something everyday.

what about when you have to launch your car? you are holding the clutch down in first and letting rev without a load. cars do that all the time when they are racing. i guess not only it is bad for your drive tran but on the motor also because there is no load

Hahaha I do that too, it seems to have an awesome effect! But I do it in 1st gear. I mostly do this to people who don't know how to do a proper left turn at a set of lights... you know, those people that sit way back behind the stop line, then they go once its clear... instead of doing what even your driving instructor told you to do and actually get out in the intersection.
