EXACTLY! I was one of the first few S2000 owners to do "gears". I paid around $1000.00 at the time to get my 4.44s. I applaud Rick's for coming into this market with their relatively LOW PRICED product. I just wish I wasn't in such a hurry years ago. I would have prefered the 4.57s anyway.

PS. We're not buying mods for a Ford or Chevy where there are millions of copies out there.

Oh, if we cut 1000-2000 in a run, we could cut the price down considerable. Anyone want to fund that for us?? it would take a few years to break even, so consider what percentage return you would want on your 200K investment. Over the two years + it would take.

Also, the total number of cars on the road, the number of cars that are modified is small. It just seams higher becasue the users that post here mod their cars.

Hope no-one took my first post like I was saying Richmond were greedy bastards for sure. I was hoping the manufacturing cost was higher because of less quantity being produced. Everybody likes to make an extra buck here and there but if the manufactoring cost of the gears are the same as the Chevy and Ford gears then I would say it was to unfair for us S2K owners to pay $400 extra.

I was a millisecond from ordering the 4.57 gears from Rick

I paid over $500 for a set of Richmond gears on my Z32. It was a limited run of approximately 100+ sets. As stated earlier, there just aren't as many S2000's and in my case, Z32's with gears...

That being said it's still a great mod and I'll will definitely be getting some 4.77's for the S.

The gearing for a Ford 9" rear end, or a GM 10-bolt in various gear ratios have already been engineered and the engineering costs have been recouped.

There are NOWHERE near the number of S2000s with richmond gears as there are Fords and Chevys.

The S2000 gear is a niche, you pay niche pricing.

If they really wanted to be greedy, wouldn't they jack up the prices of the high volume gear sets?
Exactly. The main place were you need gearing changes are 4x4s and drag cars. In other words, mainly solid axles.

OK then that means we have:
Dana 30
Dana 35
Dana 44
Dana 60 (Semi and Full)
GM 10 Bolt
GM 12 Bolt
GM 14 Bolt (Semi and Full)
Ford 8.8"
Ford 9"
Toyota 8"

These make up probably 90% of their business as they are found under 90% of 4x4s and drag cars. Not to mention a good protion of the remain percentage are most likely less prominent solids that I left out like the Dana 70/80, AMC 20, Toyota 7.5"/8.25".....You get the idea.

Just be glad you can get the gears at a somewhat reasonable price and they are made by Richmond which is widely considered to be the best aftermarket gear manufacturer...
