I think it all depends on what's more important to you. I got my 18" wagon wheels 'cuz there will ALWAYS be someone that's faster. But not as many people will look as good as I do.
One of the main reasons I went for 18" wheels is because I wanted something LIGHTER than stock.
Your just looking at the wrong manufacturers that's all.

Tirerack.com will often list the individual weight of the aftermarket wheels they offer. I believe that stock are approx. 17lb front and 18lb rear. Many of the wheels on tirerack in the 18" range are 20-22lbs. Plus the additional tire weight needs to be factored in & it all adds up...
I went with the SSR GT in 17" because the wheel weight was listed as about 1lb heavier than stock and have not noticed any loss of performance or acceleration and since I went with the BFG K-Force have better cornering and a smoother & quieter ride.
Don't forget that the larger diameter tires put the mass at a further distance from the center of the wheel, increasing rotational mass. Hurts both acceleration and braking. The tires may or may not have more grip to help in cornering but it may not be enough to overcome the rotational loss.
For performance, stay with as small a diameter wheel you can while maximizing tire choice.
