Wow...sad sad news. And the kids too. Damn.

Not saying it is weather related, but I can tell you as a private pilot...I just don't go up with winds gusting to 30kts...that's some rough air.

True; and I can tell you as a certified flight instructor that helicopters have the flying qualities of a man-hole cover.

Little are the chances you are left with when something malfunctions.

Autorotation is about your only chance, and thats only if you still have your gear box, main rotor blades, and tail rotor in working order.
