There is some really good info here! My wife and I plan on taking our S2K from Chicago to Maine for a wedding, and then down to Cape Cod to relax for a bit, and then back to Chicago again this August. We've previously done the Chicago-Cape Cod trip in a Z3 and a Saab 9-5, so it will be nice to get back to a convertible
Oh, and congrats on the wedding! Where in Chicago are you getting married?

For your car:
check all the fluid
check tire pressure(and check the spare which is 60psi)
bring extra motor juice
bring extra distilled water
tools and jack(if you don't carry those around town)
For yourself:
music
earplug(if you carrying a friend with you, if they want to sleep at all)
coffee/water
snack(something easy to carry, eat and clean like a snackbar)
map
cell phone charger
AND THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL: get plently of sleep before driving, loud music, window top and coffee will not do much if your body is tired. there's no replacement for a good night sleep.
careful driving and congrat for your next stage of life

me and my buddy drove his car from seattle to Alaska, and to save the paint we got a bunch of auto masking tape and covered up the hood and fenders, and then behind the front and rear tires. It came off clean, we just claybared it after the trip was over. I hope you have fun.

i'm about to drive across the country so this thread has been really helpful
A few tips i've picked up over the past couple months
- find a book of best drives in the US (national geographic has a good one). pick out a few nice side-drives to hit on your way to chicago
- sit up straight in your seat and/or get a lumbar support cushion for your lower back. for me, sitting straight in the s2k seat supports perfectly...slouching really screws up my back
- i got tan-colored ear plugs because i *think* wearing ear plugs while driving is illegal
congrats!
