14 hours each way (Rochester NY, to Myrtle Beach). Took 2 books on tape, my ipod (wired into my Alpine). I also brought ear plugs, which were a nice break every once in a while from the road noise: My tires are almost gone, so alot of road noise. Great trip, no complaints, and will definitely do it again. Car is a good highway car: Tried to run 80-85 mph on all interstates (Valentine 1), and averaged 30 mpg. Couldn't ask for anything more from the car. My car is a 2002 w/60,000 miles. Didn't use any oil at all on the trip.

Hey folks, Jim here.
I'm considering purchasing an S2k in WI (my home town) and driving it back to my duty statin in San Diego, CA. the reason I'm thikning about doing this is because prices (and mileage) seem to be alot lower on average in Milwaukee WI, and the midwest in general, so I figured I'd purchase and Register an S2k in Wisconsin and after my leave/ vacation, take a road trip back with a friend (or dad) back to San Diego. So am I nuts? or is this something that is possible or a "good idea."

-anyone here done a big trip before in their S2k? What are some good precautions to take? (extra oil, a bra for the bumper?, a case of redbull?). Is it best to just buy one in Cali and try to haggle it down to a better price?

all thoughts and feedback are wlecome.
I would pack a fix-a-flat just in case. Enjoy your trip!

To protect your bumper, mirrors, etc.. from insects and bugs. It gets nasty!! It'll also protect you from rock-chips as well.

The biggest risk that you take in making longs trip in this car is trying not to get speeding tickets.

My wife cant usually sleep in a car but, she sleeps in the S everytime on trips. Rockchips are your biggest enemy on the road trips.

If you decide to buy in WI, make sure you do a thorough inspection of the car's underside. One thing I noticed while shopping for my S is how clean the underside of CA cars. I still ended up buying a car originally from VA which had lots of corrosion under it. The price was hard to resist and I was able to clean up everything under the car.

A well maintained S will have no problem on cross-country drives. If you are getting an AP1, make sure you keep checking on your engine oil during the trip.
