today on the way home from work, mid 80's ,no wind, totally fantastic, i pulled up behind a boxster["s"no less]..the guy had the top down, both windows all the way up and a wind deflector that filled in the entire space between the headrests[plus a bit].....and it occurred to me that it's essentially a coupe with a big sunroof!! as a car nut raised on TR3's,porsche speedsters and generally totally open roadsters,i find it alarming that people have these neat roadsters and do their very best to turn them into targas...*thinly disguised poke at bimmers and s2k's as well*

Some people can not give up the comfort factor.
If you didn't want the wind in your hair, why'd you buy a soft top?

Let me defend myself and others a little here. I have a mingster aeroscreen, and my only gripe is that I can't put it down. Here it was ~100f today, and driving at 80mph without the aeroscreen and windows up, the AC does absolutely no good, and you bake/dehydrate rather quickly. Showing up to work in sweat soaked clothes is not my idea of making a good impression. On the other hand, tonight when I drove through my favorite section of twisties it was ~80, with a slight breeze, and there was no need for AC, let alone a screen and windows. I guess I'm saying that there are conditions under which screen/window cruising is nice, but it's not my preference. Those who drive like that all the time, on surface streets in perfect weather - those are teh people I don't understand...

To defend the Boxster ("S" even), I was out in one over the weekend, and I found that top down and windscreen up, it was nice to be able to talk without shouting and not to show up to dinner looking like I had been through a windstorm!

To that end, I was also impressed with the layout of the dash in the car, as well as the foot well space. I was offered a chance to drive, but I decided to wait until I could do so in daylight. All in all, much to my own surprise, I really liked it!

Just my $.02...

I drive most of the time with the windows down and the windscreen up, largely so I can hear the music. The windows go up only when my wife is with me.

Forget the Targa idea. Most of the bimmer, Mercedes, and Jag roadsters I see always have the tops up.

Windows & top down 99.9% of the time unless it starts to rain while on my drive. Last winter I was driving in 30 degree temps in the winter w/no snow on the road of course.

This summer I've only hit 90 degrees so far (sweating like crazy) but still top/window down w/ac running full blast.

I don't see the point in getting a convertible and cruise with the top up. I've seen so many rag tops closed. NO FUN at all.

It's best to drive on a moon lit night away from the city lights and you can gaze up to see all the stars highlighted by the bright moon.

This is another variation of the eternal question, "What does a REAL man drive?"

The answer to this question, which has been worked out by various REAL men, is (drum roll) "Anything he damn well pleases."

This answer also pertains to things like driving with the top down and the windows up.

dbw,
I agree, if the temperature is such that it is comfortable to drive with the car open, that's what I do. It's that wind through the hair (what's left of it) thing.
But as we move into fall and back into spring, I do put the windows and windscreen back up, and when it's real chilly I even put the heat on, but when it's in the 80's, I just make the radio louder so that I can hear it.
