Rock Guards Necessary?

Any one know if the rock guards in front of the front tires really serve a purpose? Has anyone removed them? They don't do much for the looks of the car.

this was covered in another thread i read the other day, they are there for a purpose and it has to do with airflow downforce and keepting the wind from whipping inside the fender well. DO NOT REMOVE THEM

Interesting note. Just today I found a six inch piece of wire(?) pierced through my rear guard just a few inches from the tire. Really weird how this punctured the guard.
