Roll Cage Vs. Hardtop on an s2000
In the event of a rollover, which one would be safer on an s2000? My parents are really paranoid because apparently a bunch of people they know in New York roll over their trucks (Trucks does not = s2000), but anyways I bought an s2000 and the agreement was that I would install a hardtop and they would pay for half of it. However, I know that a hardtop doesn't really add any support.
So in the event of a roll over would a roll cage ($1,000) give you more protection than a hardtop? ($3,000). I am not the fan of the look of a convertible s2000/roll cage, but a convertible+more protection+$2,000 less is more favorable to me if a roll cage offers more protection. Plus the other money can go towards exhaust, intake, or wheels or something
.
(maybe this belongs in S2000 Modifications and Parts forum, dunno)

Your parents are being ridiculous. Rolling over an S2000 is really hard (you have to be doing something pretty stupid). Rolling over a truck is much easier. That being said, a roll bar will give you better protection.

but on the other hand they're paying for half on his hardtop so he's just going along with it
If you're truely concerned with safety a roll cage with no helmet and secure 4 or 5-point harness to keep you in your seat could actually post more of a hazard in the event you roll over and hit your head on the steel bar overhead.
I suggest just sticking with your oem roll hoops or just get a replacement roll bar that sits higher then stock
There are some pictures of s2000s that have been rolled into a ditch and the drivers all walked away fine, the roll hoops in the S2000 are deigned to with stand alor more than a rollover. Also, the Hardtop offers no protection, its made out of aluminum.
Go check the thread full of pics of wrecked S2000s. Plenty of cars that rolled and people walked away.
If your parents insist, the rollbar is the best. A hardtop does help too, and makes the car much more civil in the winter.

Haha I live in Texas, its 32 out right now, its gonna be like 60 on christmas, but yeah that makes sense the s2000 is meant to handle a rollover. Maybe if my dad will listen to Forbes saying the honda s2000 is in the top 20 most dangerous cars by Forbes he will listen if I can proof that convertibles can withstand rollovers. (he let me get the S still cause it had a 5 star side safety rating)
A good cage that is safe, not show only, is going to cost more than the hardtop. Get the hardtop, show your parents that you are responsible with the car, and maybe a year down the road you can sell the hardtop.

There are tons of cars more dangerous than an S2000 in the event of a rollover. How well you are secured to the seat is more important than the vehicle you're driving in the event of a rollover.
