Thanks for digging up this thread. I actually never noticed that myself! Always amazed by the search function ... even though it doesn't always find what I need ...
Maybe put some padding/furry side of velcro around the edge of the latch would help mitigate the issue?

This is a small piece of rubber cove base (Home Depot for a couple bucks) that I cut down and removed the latches to install on the header with double sided tape. It is hardly noticeable (especially since the insides of our tops are nothing special to look at) and protects the top from the latches sharp edges. Some might think it too unsightly, for me, it is a small price for keeping the top in good condition.
