Default RPM @ 75mph in 6th gear?

I just noticed today while driving home that the tach was reading 4000+rpms for 75mph in 6th gear. Is that about right? Noticed it today when I was trying to listen for something rattling in my glove box so that made me take notice of the high RPMs.

According to this calculator, your '04 would be doing just a tick over 77 mph at 4000 rpm.

Hmm. interesting. Isn't that kinda high still?

My beater (91 celica) is under 4k rpm at around those speeds.

And the redline on that car is... ??? 4K isn't that much with a car that redlines at 8200 / 9000 RPM.

Does your Celica have an 8000 rpm redline and a 6 speed gear box? The two cars are geared completely different. You cannot relate one to the other. You've already witnessed what your own car does and the calculator just confirmed it. Are you hoping something is wrong with your car?

True. My point is it just seems like cruising at 75mph is pretty loud even in 6th gear. I don't mind the engine noise when I'm driving fast, but I was just surprised it's that loud even in 6th.

You are driving a dedicated convertible sports car with minimal sound insulation and very loud high performance tires. It has one of the most free flowing stock intakes and exhausts of any mass produced car. Even though the engine is turning at less than 1/2 its max speed, it is still moving stuff around at 4000 times a minute. Maybe you should have bought a Cadillac?
