Default S2000 2004 1->2 shift grind

Hello guys.

Happy new years. So I finally got my S2000!!! My dream since I was in college 5 years ago!!! So I picked up a used one with mint condition interior (AP2 2004 model). Its got about 100k miles on it. So far loving it!

However there is one thing that bugs me. When shifting from first to second, and from forth to fifth there is a grind. I made sure that my clutch was properly pressed. It seems to happen less when the car is more warmed up but it definitely sounds like a grind. Mind you I live in Canada and we are experiencing 0-7 Celsius temperatures. I have searched around the forum and it seemed like people are experiencing the same thing even when the car was bought new.

I did notice however when I drive more spirited with higher revs, the problem is non-existant.

My worry is that through long term driving, will this go progressively worse? I have owned a couple other Hondas and never experienced this before.

Please let me know guys!

And happy new years!

Henry

I would try changing the tranny fluid and see if that remedies the problem. Try a different weight fluid. Redline MT90 is a great MTF that I have been using for years. If it doesn't get better after the fluid change it could be bad synchros.

Hi. Thanks for the response. Have you had this issue before? I've did a search and it seems like a common problem even for new store bought s2000s. Can anyone shed some light for me on his issue?

Thanks!

Def try the fluid first. Low levels will cause an issue, and you should find what other Canadian drivers are using in low temps. There are as many opinions on MTF as there are brands and weights of MTF... so get the opinion of people in your climate, and from those who do the sort of driving you do.

Any grinding that goes unchecked will progressively get worse, and cost a lot of money to fix. How long may take several years, though.

I had this problem occasionally in my '00 S2000. I solved the problem by changing the way I grip the shifter in my '94 Integra. No more grind in the S2000. It was 100% operator error.

I will also vote on tranny fluid. The shifting vastly improves after a fluid change. Good Luck.

You may also want to check your clutch fluid as well. My 04 had the same problem I changed the tranny fluid and it made no difference. Changed the clutch fluid and it had a lot of build up and was very dark. My guess is that the clutch was not fully engaging, as it shifts like butter now

Thanks guys. I will try what was suggested and report my results here just in case someone else might be experiencing the same problem as me.

Do you think it is manufacture design flaw?

It seems like many people are experiencing similar things...
