I am much more inclined to believe the .38 /.42 numbers. With the top up you can tell it is not the sleekest thing around so .38 is believable when you compare it to some .32 cars. It is very obvious in a back to back comparison at 100+mph that the top down creates a huge amount of drag, so you know the CD is much higher.

OK, so who knows the actual drag numbers? Not the coefficient of drag (which is a ratio of actual drag to a "standard" shape of the same frontal area), but the actual drag. If, for example, our CD is .38 we can still have less drag than a car with a CD of .32 if our frontal area is significantly less than theirs.

This is not to imply that the S has less drag than a Boxter, I'm just wondering if anybody has the real drag numbers (or the frontal area numbers for that matter).

First off--Sorry, Greg. You're wrong on this one. Get your camcorder working again and prove me wrong.

Modrify--I had the numbers right in front of me for drag, downforce and lift with the car in various configurations (stock w/ top up, stock w/ top down, w/ Honda's hard top, w/ Mugen's hard top, with Mugen's front clip and rear spoiler, with various combinations of the above). Unfortunately I didn't have anything to write the multitude of numbers down with.

Hey, at least we sleep at night. WTH are you doing posting at 4 AM?

And you mean you don't have the gear ratios, bore/stroke, valve sizes, lift/duration/overlap, weight/length/width/height mammerized? Uhh. . . I mean memorized?

Maybe we need a new class of board member, Enthusiast, Owner, . . . Obsessed !!

I like everyone here. Pretty funny group all together. What I am more curious about is the aerodynamic lift/downforce numbers. I figure that being a convertible, the drag figures are going to be relatively poor (But not so poor compared to the Audi TT coupe, I knew that shape didn't look right...). I want to do a few aerodynamic modifications to specifically reduce lift. I don't want to add any rear spoilers or anything like that, so most to all of my mods will be underbody mods. I know the Mugen front air dam has a pretty smooth undertray that extends just a little bit past the front wheels. I have seen a few rear undertrays and diffusers, but they all look a bit extreme and I am not sure if they are truly functional pieces. I am only interested in functional pieces. If anyone knows anything about this, I'd be very interested to hear about it...

Best regards,
Matt

What I want to know is:

how does the big grin on my face as I hit 9000 affect the cd figure - roof up and roof down comparisons please,
similarly, how is it affected by my vomiting involuntarily at the site of another ugly car (Audi TT or Boxster, for example) - does that depend on how far I lean out the window?

Seriously, chaps - unless we've all got an inferiority complex, what does it matter?

It matters because past about 120 MPH a boxster S will pull on you that's why it matters. Not that i am doing those speeds everyday.
