S2000 an "Exotic"?
I believe we have an exotic ENGINE sitting in a sports car designed to be affordable (relatively speaking). Thus the total package can never be considered exotic but by the same token, no one can tell me the engine isn't. The more I research the engine the more impressed I am with it.
OF COURSE THE S2000 IS AN EXOTIC!
Just because it's affordable doesn't mean it's not an exotic. You can buy pre-owned Ferrari's all day long for $40 to $50k. Does that mean they've ceased to be an exotic? Of couse not!
Price isn't the issue. An exotic auto is one that has cutting edge technology specifically designed to make the car drive faster. It sacrifices creature comfort for amazing performance and it's not a car that will appeal to the pocketbook of the masses. That's the S2000 right down the line. Besides, if you think that 5,000 units a year isn't limited production, then go talk to GM. Once their auto sales, any model, drop below 100,000 units a year, they discontinue it!
Jesus, you "near-exotic" boys don't know a good thing when you have one. For those of you who think that the S2k has too many mechanical faults to be an exotic, when was the last time you tried to keep a Lotus on the road? How about a Ferrari or a Lambo? Don't let the price tag fool you. The S2000 is a gift from Honda to the world. Just cuz a car is tagged at over $100,000 doesn't mean it's worth $100,000. Those Italian exotics are rolling P.O.S., mechanically speaking.
As for Amartin's comment about 19 yr olds buying S2ks, all I can say is 'wake up boy.' We've got 19 year old millionaires in this country who can buy and sell any damned thing they want. (At least their daddies can). It doesn't take away from the nature of the beast.
Price isn't the issue. The issue is racing heritage, the singular purpose of the car, the tremendous strides Honda made in developing it. This car is an exotic because it's a RACE

(sorry, hit the return key by mistake)
RACE CAR FOR THE ROAD. That's an exotic. No glove box, no heated seats. Instead, we get HID headlights, 9,000 RPMs, 150 mph top end and a 0 to 60 time that beats all but a handful of other high performance cars.
'nuff said!

Have you priced early model TRs? You can buy them for the price of a Mercedes SLK.
The S2000's technology alone would classified our car as an exotic. Just consider its design from a Japanese point-of-view: Rear Wheel drive! Powered soft top! 120 horsepower per liter!

This is quite interesting: in The Netherlands the average gross income is about 55000NLG, the S2000 costs 102940 NLG MSRP. So the S2000 costs in the Netherlands almost TWICE the average gross income. And in the States it's only 4000US$ above average income! No wonder you don't see many S2000's (or other expensive cars for that matter). The main reason: our taxes are outrageous for cars, about 40% of the price are taxes. And you don't want to know what we pay on income taxes
