Is this s2000 a good buy?
I'm looking at ap1s now also. What the point of a ap1 with the ap2 engine? I'd simply keep looking. There are plenty out there. Doesn't look like a smart buy to me. But, history has also taught me that someone who keeps pushing for a reason to buy a car, will end up not listening to the advice he/she asked for. The pull to buy is too strong. Walk away! Don't waist time looking at a car that had buyer beware stamped on its forehead. Listen to the advice you're getting here. Remember there is always, always another car. I'd rather wait for one without issues than buy one I know I'm going to have to dump money into straight away.
Needs a new top, headlights need polishing and a new AC. Man, I'd run.

Just FYI, I picked up my first s2000, an 04 model with 30,500 miles on it in 2011 for 15k. I sold it after 2 years for $500 more after putting 27,000 miles on it. I also think you can do a lot better. I actively looked for 6 months before I found that car.
I'm sure you'll find one that has far fewer issues than that one. That being said, if that car is located very near you and for future reference, you could always go "check it out" to give you idea of what to look for in the future. If it is a distance away forget about it. Lots of good advice in this thread.

I traveled 100 miles to get my 2006 with 37k miles. That's a bit extreme for many, but the point is what's a couple of days of travel to get what you want? You being on the east coast shouldn't have any problem finding an excellent example of an AP1 within 300 miles for under 15k. Just be patient and search craigslist daily. I found mine 13hrs after it was posted.
I know it is out of your price range, but worth the extra money. Keep looking and saving money. The right one will come along.
