Default S2000 heater....

when it gets cold and i have my top down, i just turn the knob to hot without turning on the heat and heats starts coming out while goin in speed. but once the car is stoped, heat is stop coming out.

so i was wondering if the s2000 is using the engine heat or what? and does it waste gas when i do this?

this also happens with air when knob is turn to cold. i just feel the outside air coming out but im not sure about the heater.

The reason why you feel hot air when you turn the knob to heat is because you are circulating hot coolant through the heater core. Normally a fan would draw air through the heater core which heats it up as it exits into the cabin. The heated air coming through the vents is probably just air passing through the heater core and the vent from you moving which is why you only feel the airflow when the car is in motion.

If you need heat when you are stopped turn on the fan.

I think you've turned on the heat at this point.

All cars have passive air flow now to keep carbon monoxide from building up in the car. Even with the fan off, you will feel air coming in the vents at speed. The air will be hot or cold depending on what you select, but the heater doesn't use gas, it draws heat from the engine.

The only way to keep the air flowing while stopped would be to turn the fan on. The a/c doesnt have to be on, just the fan speed. Only the a/c button puts strain/wastes gas. Driving with the top down wastes gas too though. You'll get better mileage having the top up with the heat on recirc.

So... turning on the fan doesnt cause any strain on the engine?

Yes, the cabin fan is an electrical fan and your engine's alternator provides plenty of charge to power the fan unless you have a crazy sound system sucking up all the power.
