S2000 losing ground
I was at the doctors reading I belive motortrend. Tried to find the article online but didnt have much luck. May be another user has read this.
The article compared 10 cars. Some included the mazda 3 gt, porsche gt3, corvette, s2k, bmw 335i, mini cooper s, louts, mitsu evo, and a few other cars.
I noticed in the lap times our S lost to a couple of competitors I thought we could keep up with and beat.
I was very suprised we lost to the mazda 3gt by like 2 sec on the track. I could understand in a straight line but not in the track.
What are your thoughts on this if you read the article.
Sorry if repost

your comparing the car to a gt3 and a lotus.....
In my humble opinion the s2k stomps on any mazda on the market right now. I love the quality and handling over a corvette and a 335i. I absolutely hate the interior of the mini poopers. The evo is one of my favorites but I like my top down layed back. So to sum it up the only cars I would trade on your list for would be the lotus and the gt3. I don't care what some magazine editor says in his article the mazda 3 gt is a pos.

I know the corvette and gt3 win hands down against our car on any condition.
But the mazda gt3, has nice power but didn't know on a track would be that much faster than a s.
I think the only cars we beat on the track was the mini cooper, civic si. The rest we lost to.

Looking at that list... I wouldn't be suprised. They were all actually designed during this decade.
The S2000 is an old car, with an old design and old targets and goals. It was ground breaking... like the NSX when it was launched... but things change and the bar is constantly raised.
I first saw this when a Neon SRT-4 beat me back in 2004. I was so ashamed of my ride, I sold my first S2000 for an M3.
But now I'm back with an AP2 with a SC... so now I'm happy again and whopping everyone. Amazing what a hairdryer can do to your penis size.

In stock trim the car is little underpowered by today's standards and unfortunetly it's expensive to pull additional power out the motor. With a little effort and money though I think the car can still compete well. And do so in style.
To me, saying that the S2000 is losing ground is like saying that an MGA or E-Jag, or even an F-40, has lost ground. Cars that give drivers a unique driving experience can't lose ground unless the driving experience they offer becomes commonplace. The S2000 is as much fun to drive today as it was in 1999, it's still competative on tracks and autocross courses, and it still offers a very unique driving experience, and a bargain basement price. The car has moved more toward the mainstream with additions like a clock and glass rear window, but the driving experience is still quite unique and very enjoyable.
I guess the way I see it, any car that offers a very unique driving experience (that is fun or enjoyable) establishes a class of one, and in a class of one it is not possible to lose ground.
I know at least one national level autocrosser who thinks my S2000 is more responsive (on autocross courses) than the GT3 she drove in the Natinals, so I certainly don't feel that my car is losing any ground.

The S2000 dominated B-Stock until it was bumped up to A-Stock, where it remains competative. Seems to me that it is holding it's own, on all fronts, quite well.
Put the same rubber on the S2000 that comes on the GT3 (Sport Cups) and the S2000 is transformed.

sure the car has had a limited evolution. sure other cars can run around a course faster. sure cars have more hp and can track better now than ever before, all kinds of cars offer performance.
there is no roadster out there, any year, for this price range, new or used that is a better ride than my honda, imho. sure i can spend more for a boxster S or a Z4M...and get better performance, or less for a rx8 or 350Z and get comparable or superior performance...but there is no roadster.
i did not buy this honda for it's total performance numbers, there are other cars that can wipe it up, street or track....i just love the car.
now if honda chose to evolve the car, instead of killing it with a mysteriously slow death, that would be nice. i would be a candidate for an evolved S2000.....actually when i am ready for that i can just go get a used boxster S.

I saw the same article, I actually have the magizine upstairs in the bathroom. If you read closely you note that the track driver cut the track time short. He complained of brake fade, which most here would notice on a track day. So the lap times suffered more from the driver than actual ability.
"He found fault with the brakes, which faded badly enough to cut his run short by a lap"
Last years road and track article rated the S2000 above some stiff compitition, including a viper. So you gotta read these in the bathroom so that you can wipe afterward.

Here's the article you read:

Also the Mazda was only 1/3 a second faster (not 2 seconds), and it ran the full set of laps
