S2000 Manufacturing
Hey guys, new on this forum.. I hope you can help me out a little.
Im having a discussion about the manufacturing of the S2000. As I recall the S2000 is mostly "handbuilt" in a special factory in Japan. When I told my friend this he says that when a car maker takes the decision to build a car by hand its mostly a cost issue, and that it actually lowers the quality of the car.
Does anyone have some more info about the making of S2000? Or perhaps some thoughts about our argument. Ofcourse Im on Hondas side, thinking about the superb quality of my car..
Eh.. hmm.. sorry guys, now I think I have to take a ride, all this talk makes me wanna rev.

The S2000 was originally "hand assembled" (I guess it's not quite the same) at Honda's Toichigi plant in Takanezawa. The only two other cars that were produced at Toichigi were the Insight and NSX. At some point mid 2004 I believe, the S2000 manufacturing was moved to Honda's Suzuka plant. I think the assembly procedure changed at this time as well. I don't know if the Insight or NSX are still produced at Toichigi.
Tell you friend that Ferrari Enzos are handbuilt too, and ask him if he thinks those are garbage. These days it costs more to pay a person to put a car together (wages, benefits, etc...) than it costs to have a machine to it on an assembely line.

Was your friend implying it's more cost effective to hand assemble, as a means of cutting corners? If it were more cost effective to hand assemble then Ford and GM would probably go through a lot fewer layoffs. As someone stated above, many of the world's "finest" automobiles are hand assembled...Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, Ferrari, and the list goes on.
