S2000 for occasional to heavy track use?

Hey there, been lurking around the forums lately but it's my first post. I am looking for a street car that would get occasional track use initially, then possibly become a dedicated track car later on. I recently attended a racing school that used RSX's and I love the lightweight, hi-revving concept as it applies to road racing. I have a few questions for those of you who track your cars.

Is the S2K durable enough for the track and what have you done to improve the car?

Is there a certain model year I should look for or avoid? I'll be buying this car used.

What is the weight and is the balance 50/50?

Being RWD, does the car get "out of shape" faster than a FWD RSX?

Is a hard top available or is the standard roll bars good enough for most club racing?

I used the search and didn't find much there, thanks for the help.

Sorry can't answer all those questions. I can answer your main question, the S2K is well suited for the track. You can probably find answers to your specific questions through searches or reading the many threads in the Racing and Competition forum.

I think that the S200 will hold up for you fine on the track. I would go for the newest one possible if you want the glass rear window and door mounted speakers. The weight balance is claimed to be 50/50. What do you mean by get out of shape. From what I have been told by many people rear wheel drive cars handle better but I really do not see how. You can get a removable hardtop for about $3000 new but I am sure you can get them for cheaper if you look for a used one. Try EBAY. I have no clue about the stock roll bars though......

Krisko,
The S2000 can definitely take a lot of track abuse. There are many, many modifications available to make it even more track worthy, but the car is also wonderful in its stock form.
My car weighs 2680lbs with a full tank of gas and no driver. The front weighs 1360lbs, so the distribution is 50.75/49.25. With me in the car, the distribution changes to a perfect 50/50.
I've never driven an RSX but compared to my old Integra, I think the S2000 is much easier and more predictable to drive. At least I feel much more comfortable in the S2000 than the Integra.
Hard tops are available as are several different roll bars.

the hard top has no structural significance, you need a roll cage.
Welcome to the forum.

People track the $hit out of this car. Do a search on "Track Toilet" or "Vapors" Their cars are track prepped.

screw the factory hard top. The mugen one looks much better IMO and costs almost the same?

Just get track-only brake pads, wheels/tires (you can use your stock wheels and get bling bling street wheels!), bleed your brakes, change your oil...that's all you need for the track.

I bought my car exactly for this purpose...but find it becoming more and more of a track car than a street car...
