I was going to post this on the electronics forum but I though naw, its probably of general s2000 interest and not technical. Plus I post there too much.
Here's a pic of the different OEM S2000 Radios:
The top one being a USA 2000 (similar to the 2001 which has a clock)
Middle is a 2000 UK Spec tape deck radio (yeah tape deck!)
And the bottom is the gem, the 2002MY USA radio.
All 3 radios are built for 4 channels (speakers).
Only the front 2 channels of each radio are used. In the 2002 model they get a power increase and door mounted tweeters.
The UK spec has a higher power output than the 2000-2001 US radio. In case you're wondering how the UK radio responds radio stations in the US - you get the full band of FM stations in the US. In fact on some you'll get the stations call letters.
The 2002 Radio is fine deck. You're getting more power to your doors, AND to your your rears. If you have 2002 and upgrade your stereo, sell the deck to a 00-01 owner. They'll love it! The wiring is the same on this radio so can simply swap them no problem!
Lastly Rear speaker muting. An old issue... The 2000-2001 US spec radios don't mute the rear speakers (Remember this car was never intended for rears so why would they care?) so a seperate circuit is needed to compensate. The UK radio does a full 4 speaker mute. and ...drumroll... so does the 2002 US spec. This means my less expensive rear speaker harness can be used with the 2002s and you'll have more power to drive the rears.
Okay! I'm in!!! If anyone has a 2002 and has replaced the stereo, or is planning on it, PLEASE send me a PM!! The button layout alone is enough for me, but more power!?
Please, please, please, please PM me if you are replacing your 2002 radio!!
Ok Smarty pants - you didn't get them all Lucid. Here's a pic of the Aussie radio we get which comes with a six stacker as standard. It's basically a variation of the UK unit (except Australia got it first ) but does have some differences as you can see from the button labelling.
