I hesitate to post something that sounds like hundreds of other posts I've read here over the years, but I'll make it brief.
After driving my uncle's 2000 Corvette convertible and 300ZX TT a couple weeks ago, I was again reminded of how unique the S2000 is. It's not THE BEST in any of it's particular characteristics, but it might have the best combination of characteristics. I see it as more a car for subtle tastes than a corvette or Z car would be. It takes subtlety and a skilled touch to get the ultimate experience out of an S2000, and these things cannot be distilled down and compared in the form of specs and test results. In a way, what is great about the S2000 defies analysis. That's why so many don't understand it and don't care for it.
That's perfectly ok, and I'm not offended when others aspire to be the fastest/newest/coolest. I'll just be having fun quietly mastering this one car.

I purchased mine in February 2003 and my contenders were quite similar to yours.
For me it is a 2nd. car (as it is probably for you) and not a daily driver.
If it had been my daily driver, I would have probably chosen the G35 coupe (with markups and all) because of its livability/practicality and 4 seats.
But it has very little to offer in the passion/fun/true sports car sphere in my opinion.
The Z3 (in M guise)was a contender, but more expensive, plastic window, old outdated platform with twitchy handling all made the decision easier to take.

I've paid my dues with everything from an Oldsmobile-powered '33 Ford to the S 2000 and virtually everything in between. I've owned Porsches and BMW's, Jaguars and Fiats, a Mini-Cooper S, and a Corvette-powered '52 Chevy, and a jillion Triumphs. In short whatever was interesting, but always a convertible of some kind. I really feel sorry for those who have started so high on the evolutionary chain as the S 2000. You might appreciate it more if you had tried lesser machines. Are there better, hotter, faster, more expensive choices? Of course, but the first day I ever saw an article about an S 2000 I said, "that's a real sports car." I haven't changed my mind. If I had the opportunity to buy a "club sports" model of the S 2000 with roll-up windows, a manual top, and no A/C, I'd do it, but even in its luxurious form I love it,
Enjoy what you have. If you want something else and can arrange it, go for it. Life is too short to drive boring cars!

Keep the faith people. I really don't know how a person can own/drive an S2000 and not it. I honestly don't...
As far as the competition... Who cares? I don't think Honda does.

I bought mine after riding in my friend's 87 Integra Type R. That was the first time I experienced VTEC and fell in love. In 1999, that same friend told me that Honda was coming out with a car that's supposed to be faster, handle better, and be a convertible. I searched and searched until I finally bought one.
After almost 3 years and 83k miles later, I'm still enjoying it as if I just got it today. It truly is a bond between man and machine that endures the test of time and overcomes the longing for other newer cars. You just can't beat the overall package for the money.
I'd buy another one today if I was in market for a car.
