A lot of good responses in here.

For 50% of people, suspension is an aesthetic mod. 45% are looking for performance and think that no body roll = good suspension. 5% actually do research and try to improve upon the stock setup instead of just slapping springs or coilovers on their cars.

Suspension balance is all about personal preference and driving style. Some people may prefer a car that oversteers a bit. Some prefer a bit of understeer. Depends on the driver.

I'm one of those that loves to tinker. I'm always doing something to the car. I've switched between stock and aftermarket exhaust at least 6 times in the past year. I have 2 shift knobs that I alternate between every couple months. It's just how I am. I have always had that urge to modify. Switching back & forth between parts keeps me busy without emptying my bank account and not changing the car too much. I love the S2000 in stock form and don't want to ruin that balance.
x2.

suspension tuning is all about personal preference and driving style. in stock form, the S2000 is suspension is AWESOME for most people. but like most things in life, the suspension can be tailored to the driver to take it to the next level.

from a weight perspective the weight distribution is near perfect - 51/49 F/R from the factory. i will also have my coilovers corner balanced to ensure good weight distribution after height adjustment.

I like the handling and suspension that comes from the factory for the everyday driving I do with some spirited sessions. For purposes other than that, I am sure you could better performance with aftermarket parts. While the OEM settings are very good, Honda did have to find some balance between cost and performance, so some sacrifices were made all the way around.

i'm glad you like this discussion

i guess after all those countless reviews about AP1's spine braking ride and widow making nature Honda took it bit too far to the soft side...

Even if the car is perfectly balanced handling wise... does not mean it can't be improved on... a properly tuned lower suspension with wide grippy tires may not be any more balanced than stock, but may in fact get around a course faster due to a higher limit of performance... Balance in handling refers to the tendency to oversteer and or understeer, not to the absolute limit of the car.

Body roll is not necessarily a bad thing. Depending on the kind of handling performance you're trying to achieve, too flat handling may compromise things like feel, transition and response. As with other mods, if you start with the goal, you'll have a better chance of success.

And yes it is perfectly balanced, it's the owners who are sometimes unbalanced.

they way i see it stiff suspension will compromise grip and might be very bad for compliance on bumpy roads.
but i don't see how it can cause less feel and response...
(and we're talking reasonable stiff here not crazy stiff which is whole another story).

It is nicely balanced for a daily driver street car. It is not really set up for the track or autoX but with a little work can be made to be perfectly balanced for the track or autoX. Of course at this point it is not very fun on the road. It is well balanced in terms of weight distribution.
