Any reason you pick an SLK55 over a Porsche Boxster?
Just this morning I watched an old top gear where Clarkson compared these two cars. I only watched half of the episode and he was leaning to the SLK55. POWER!!

I would look to importing your own.
I think the import tariff in SA is like 35% ($20k + (20k*.35) = $27k, plus $7k shipping = $34k) - runs the price up, plus whatever fees and taxes there might be.

It would be worth chartering a cargo truck full of S2000's to South Africa at those prices!

the slk looks sick especially the amg. if i just wanted to drive a cool looking car i'd pick the slk, but i'd go w/ the s2k in your situation. it'll just be cheaper in everything compared to the slk and just as fun if not more fun.

If u are leaning more toward the slk, i'd would wait 4-5 months and the value should fall once the newer ones are on the road.

Importing is out of the question from the US as we drive on the right hand side and it no longer legal to get a left hand drive car registered. But importing direct from Japan is a possibility but once again, its not easy to register an imported car, well at least from what I know.

or maybe look for a SLK55 with a higher mileage will be much closer to the S2k price. But with Merc maintance is going to be expensive.

S2k was my first choice but the availability is really putting me off.

Good point on waiting a few month for the 2012 SLK to come out. hmm...

Never really considered the Boxter guess must dig out the episode of Top Gear and have a look.

Having a Porsche in South Africa is asking to be hi-jacked not that SLK is much better. S2k much be the cheaper and safer option to go with.

I have to say I would trade my S for the SLK 55 AMG... Then, I would immediately sell it for a huge profit and get something more reliable... Probably a 370z convertible.
