Factory airbag comes out easy. There's two Torx bolts on either side, and a wiring harness....if you have the right Torx bit and a good ratchet you'll have the airbag out in 5 minutes (Just be sure you disconnect the battery before removing the bag...that way there's no accidental discharges!). As for the steering wheel, it should be pretty easy as well with the right tools.

For protection, 303 aerospace protectant.

For safety, nothing. Slippery protectants don't belong on your steering wheel. Clean with a damp cloth and leave 'em alone.
