Couldn't it also be that the motor is already tweaked out as much as they felt comfortable with?
The type-v models or whatever they have in Japan only upgrade suspensions yes?
Or perhaps it's SO GOOD that they didn't NEED an R

The NSX motor is also pretty tweaked out and they stil have a type-r version.
The guy that I bought my car from was planning on making his as close as possible to the type r. He painted it Championship White, and the rims were painted champ white, he changed all the interior: seats red everything else black, and was going to put a hardtop on next...
I was going to finish it by adding the hardtop, lowering it more, and then doing some engine mods. I cleared the headlights, tinted the windows, lowered it, did the gears and diff... However I got off course as soon as I saw the work meister for a great deal... and now here it is...
Mine feels kind of like a Type R as well. I have the black & red two-tone leather interior (exclusive to Canadian 04-05's only). (along with the OEM hardtop).
One main reason why it can't be a type-r was touched on early on in the thread related to the fact that it can't be taken to the track right off the lot because of its roadsterness...
Most tracks require full roll bars for convertables EVEN if they have a hard top because the hard top is not a functional body part, it doesn't offer the structural rigidity to protect you that a normal roof on a car would.
Every part on the type-r's are wind tunnel tested to offer very precise aerodynamic coefficients, and although the hard tops are wind tunnel tested, again they aren't valid for track use as a protective element, so Honda would basically have to add a built in roll cage to the equation + hard top to get it to be up their own type-r standards. I doubt they're seeing much in the terms of ROI on something like this.
Oh yeah, and our engines are already pretty tweaked out straight from the factory...
One reason I believe is that it is a convertible so it can't be taken to track right out of the box. Some tracks and clubs have regulations for convertible. It is more of a rare car, so it is pretty useless to have different versions of it. Perhaps they should have done type R like modifications or options. For example no a/c, no sound deading, maybe even coupe.
actually, the built in roll cage on the S2000 is considered sufficient according to the NASA. so far, every track/auto-x I have been to has allowed me to run with the stock roll bars/a-pillar.
auto-x I can imagine wouldn't be as strict, but I know over here, each year the clubs keep getting more and more strict on roll cage specs for actual track events. Most of them now won't allow the s2k without an aftermarket roll bar, unless you are reaaallly short... hehehe and they won't accept a hardtop as an alternative... :sighs:
I am 6' 4" so the stock rolls bars are worthless to me.
